Health Insurance

The Basics
Not just moved to a new location usually means a change of the city often means job change. And chances are if you work, you will be covered by some type of managed care health plans.

There are three major types of managed care plans:
1. Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
2. Point of Service (POS)
3. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
All these plans offer great health insurance benefits to members and their families. If you are lucky enough to have a choice of plans, consider the advantages and disadvantages, respectively. Compare the cost of treatment, the difference in premiums, deductible amounts and your freedom to choose doctors outside the plan. There are many other coverage to compare too from prescription drugs to dental to alternative therapies. Make sure you understand the main points of each.

The second type of health insurance is a fee for service, which usually include the same cost as managed care. The difference is you get paid for each doctor's visit, with claims submitted either by the patient or medical provider. A major advantage unlike some managed care plans, fee for service allows patients to visit his or her doctor, or her, choice.

For those of you who are unemployed or self employed, an individual health insurance policy is always an option. Unfortunately the high price for this policy and coverage is usually less comprehensive than managed care plans. The good news is that, in many cases, your insurance premiums will be tax detectable. Of course, if you are married, you can always try to catch a ride on your partner's health insurance group benefits plan. Good luck and stay health and be sure to understand all the basics of health insurance before making your decision.

  1. Finding the most suitable health insurance plan for you isn’t always easy, but it is worth taking the time to look around and consider all the potential plans on offer before committing to anything. If you're really stuck, however, you could seek the help of a health insurance broker who may be able to advise you on which plan would best meet your needs.
