Cheap Short Term Car Insurance

Cheap short term car insurance is a great option for people who are borrowing a car temporarily, putting an old car back on the road for short term use, or using a vehicle for seasonal use only. And despite what you might think, getting one the these policies is fairly simple. Juts follow the steps below and you will be on the road in no time.

1. Check registration and insurance regulation in your state

If you are using a vehicle you own you will be able to register and insure it under your own name as normal. But if you are borrowing a car or using a rental, things might be different. For example: in New York State a vehicle can be registered by someone other than its owner. But the law states that the registrant and the insured must be the same person. If you are using a temporary insurance policy in New York your name must be on both the insurance policy and the registration. If you are using a rental, insurance and registration requirements might be slightly different. In all likelihood you probably just need to secure your cheap short term car insurance policy and inform the rental company that you have done so. Registration and titling remains in the rental company's name.

2. Obtain multiple quotes

Once you have the insurance and registration details worked out it's time to contact insurance companies to get your quotes. Whether you do so online or over the phone, you will need to have your driver's license number handy along with your social security number and a permanent address. The insurance company will ask for information about the car, where you intend to drive it, how long you intend for it to be on the road, and under whose name will registered. They may also require about the owner as well. Be sure not to accept any quote until you have had a chance to compare all of them. When you compare your looking at them line by line to see who's offering the most amount of coverage for the least amount of money. If you are borrowing a car it's between you and the car owner as to whether you are going to carry liability only or also including comprehensive and collision. If you will be driving a rental the company will probably require you to carry all three.

3. Choose the best option and make your payment

Once you find a cheap short term car insurance policy you like you will sign any necessary  paperwork and make your payment. Many companies offering short term car insurance will allow you to pay for it on a month basis. Others may request full payment up front for whether term you take the policy for. For example: if the policy term is three months you may have to pay all three months' worth at the start of the policy. Be sure that once your policy is in force you get a paper copy of it along with declaration pages and an ID insurance card if it's required by your state. Most states require that you carry some sort of documentation in the car to be presented to police officers in the event of a traffic stop or accident.

If you are unable to furnish documentation you will probably be issued at least a traffic ticket, if not a court summons. A lenient judge may dismiss the charge against you if you can prove you had insurance in force despite not having documentation, but don't count on it. Avoid the whole issue by procuring documentation from insurance company and carrying it in the vehicle. more info
